Music Lesson FAQ

ImageQ. We only have a keyboard. Do we need to get an acoustic piano?

A. Keyboards can be OK for beginners as long as they are 88 Key and fully weighted action. Do not spend less than $1,200 on your keyboard, or you will be wasting not only the money on the instrument, but also on the lessons. It is our belief that by the time a student has reached the end of Book 2, they will begin to have physical deficits with regards to fingering, and aural deficits with regards to sensitivity unless an acoustic piano is acquired. Acoustic pianos can often be rented for as little as $30 per month.

Q: We bought our child a guitar for Christmas, can she begin learning on this instrument?

A: Unless the guitar you purchased was a Strunal, or a Joven, and was specifically sized by a professional, it is very unlikely that your instrument would be usable under the circumstances of musical study. All students need to have an instrument that has been sized and approved by the instructor.

Q: How much should my child be practicing?

A: Students are expected to practice daily for a length of time equal to the length of their lesson. This time can also include the completion of worksheets, or other activities prescribed by the instructor.
